Copyright and patents protect different things. Copyright protects original works — books, software, artwork, music, films, designs on packaging. It exists from the moment the work is created, and registration with the Copyright Office of IPO Pakistan gives you official evidence of ownership. A patent protects an invention — a new product or process — and is granted by the Patent Office only after examination.

Documents required
- CNIC of the author, inventor or owner, or registration documents of the firm or company
- For copyright: copies of the work and the date and place it was first published, if published
- For a patent: written description and drawings of the invention
- Details of who created the work and who owns it (for example employer or commissioning party)
- Signed authorisation for the person filing the application
