About this service

FBR can select a taxpayer for audit to check that the income, expenses and taxes declared in a return are supported by records. An audit normally starts with a notice asking for books of account and documents, followed by queries and, at the end, findings that may lead to an amended assessment.

Being selected does not mean you have done something wrong, but how you respond matters. We help you go through it in an organised way.

  • Review of the audit notice and its scope
  • Checklist of the books and records to produce
  • Reconciliation of your return with bank statements, sales tax returns and withholding statements
  • Written replies to audit queries, prepared for your review
  • Explanation of the findings and of your options if you disagree

Appearance before tax officers in formal proceedings is handled by suitably authorised professionals.

Documents required

  • The audit notice and any later letters from FBR
  • The return, wealth statement and financial statements for the year under audit
  • Books of account, ledgers and vouchers
  • Bank statements of all accounts for the year
  • Sales and purchase invoices, and sales tax returns if registered
  • Withholding statements and tax payment receipts

Exact requirements depend on your case. Your officer will confirm the final list after reviewing your details.

How it works

  1. Send the inquiry form on this page with your contact details.
  2. We review the audit notice and your return and confirm the scope and the fee with you.
  3. You provide the records on our checklist; we reconcile them and identify weak points.
  4. Replies and schedules are prepared and shared with you; they are submitted only after your approval.
  5. We explain FBR's findings and the next steps available to you.

Frequently asked questions

Why was I selected for audit?

Selection can be based on risk criteria, information held by FBR or other methods the law permits. The notice normally states the basis; we explain it to you.

How long does a tax audit take?

It varies with the size of the case, the records available and FBR's own schedule. We cannot promise a time, but organised records shorten it.

What if I do not have complete records?

Tell us at the start. We help you rebuild what can be rebuilt from banks, suppliers and customers, and present the position honestly.
