About this service
A registered trademark gives you the legal right to stop others from using your brand name or logo for the same kind of goods or services. In Pakistan trademarks are registered with the Trade Marks Registry of the Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPO Pakistan) under the Trade Marks Ordinance, 2001.
Registration is done class by class, according to the goods or services the mark is used for, and passes through several stages.
- Search of the register for identical or similar marks before you apply
- Advice on the classes that cover your products or services
- Application prepared and filed with the Registry
- Follow-up through examination and replies to any objections
- Publication in the Trade Marks Journal, when others may oppose, and then registration
The Registry decides whether a mark is accepted and how long each stage takes; applications commonly take a long time, and you can use the mark while yours is pending.
Documents required
- CNIC of the applicant, or registration documents of the firm or company
- The brand name and a clear image of the logo
- List of the goods or services the mark is used for
- Date the mark was first used in Pakistan, if already in use
- Signed authorisation for the person filing the application
- Business address and contact details
Exact requirements depend on your case. Your officer will confirm the final list after reviewing your details.

Frequently asked questions
How long does trademark registration take?
It depends on the Registry's workload and on whether objections or oppositions are raised. It commonly takes a long time; we do not promise a date. Your application date is what establishes your priority.
Is company registration enough to protect my brand name?
No. Registering a company or business name with SECP or FBR does not give trademark rights. Those come from trademark registration.
Does a Pakistani trademark protect me abroad?
No. Protection is territorial. For other countries a separate application is needed there.
