Is a Salary of Rs. 50,000 Tax-Free in Pakistan?

Yes. For Tax Year 2027, annual taxable salary up to Rs. 600,000 is exempt from income tax under the salaried slab table.

This equals Rs. 50,000 per month for an employee receiving the same taxable salary throughout the year.

For example:

Monthly taxable salary = Rs. 50,000

Annual taxable salary = Rs. 50,000 × 12 = Rs. 600,000

Annual income tax = Rs. 0

However, this exemption from salary income tax does not necessarily remove other tax obligations, reporting requirements or taxes relating to other income sources.

How Much Tax Is Deducted on a Rs. 60,000 Monthly Salary?

If an employee earns a taxable salary of Rs. 60,000 per month:

Annual salary = Rs. 60,000 × 12 = Rs. 720,000

Tax-free threshold = Rs. 600,000

Taxable amount above threshold = Rs. 120,000

Applicable rate = 1%

Annual tax = Rs. 120,000 × 1% = Rs. 1,200

Estimated monthly income tax = Rs. 100

Income Tax on a Rs. 100,000 Monthly Salary

A person earning a taxable monthly salary of Rs. 100,000 has annual taxable salary of Rs. 1,200,000.

Under the 2026–27 salary tax slabs:

Annual tax = (Rs. 1,200,000 − Rs. 600,000) × 1%

Annual tax = Rs. 6,000

Estimated monthly income tax = Rs. 500

The employee's estimated monthly salary after this income tax deduction would be Rs. 99,500, before any other payroll deductions.

Income Tax on a Rs. 150,000 Monthly Salary

For a taxable monthly salary of Rs. 150,000:

Annual taxable salary = Rs. 1,800,000

Applicable slab = Rs. 1,200,001 to Rs. 2,200,000

Annual tax formula:

Rs. 6,000 + 11% × (Rs. 1,800,000 − Rs. 1,200,000)

Annual tax = Rs. 6,000 + Rs. 66,000

Annual income tax = Rs. 72,000

Estimated monthly tax = Rs. 6,000

Estimated monthly salary after income tax = Rs. 144,000, excluding other deductions.

Income Tax on a Rs. 200,000 Monthly Salary

For a taxable monthly salary of Rs. 200,000:

Annual taxable salary = Rs. 2,400,000

Applicable slab = Rs. 2,200,001 to Rs. 3,200,000

Annual tax calculation:

Rs. 116,000 + 20% × (Rs. 2,400,000 − Rs. 2,200,000)

Annual tax = Rs. 116,000 + Rs. 40,000

Annual income tax = Rs. 156,000

Estimated monthly tax = Rs. 13,000

Estimated monthly salary after income tax = Rs. 187,000, excluding other deductions.

Income Tax on a Rs. 300,000 Monthly Salary

Annual taxable salary = Rs. 300,000 × 12 = Rs. 3,600,000

Applicable slab = Rs. 3,200,001 to Rs. 4,100,000

Annual income tax:

Rs. 316,000 + 25% × (Rs. 3,600,000 − Rs. 3,200,000)

Rs. 316,000 + Rs. 100,000 = Rs. 416,000

Annual income tax = Rs. 416,000

Average monthly income tax = Rs. 34,666.67

This amount is an average annualized estimate, rather than a guarantee of the exact deduction on every payslip.

How to Calculate Salary Income Tax in Pakistan

To estimate income tax on your salary, follow these steps.

Step 1: Calculate Annual Taxable Salary

Multiply your regular taxable monthly salary by 12, then account for any applicable taxable bonuses, allowances and adjustments.

Step 2: Identify Your Tax Slab

Find the annual taxable income range in the FBR salary tax table.

Step 3: Apply the Tax Formula

Use the fixed tax amount plus the marginal percentage on income exceeding the lower threshold of your slab.

Step 4: Calculate Annual Income Tax

Apply the applicable legal adjustments, tax credits or reliefs where eligible.

Step 5: Estimate Monthly Salary Tax

Divide the estimated annual tax by 12 to obtain a monthly average. Your employer's actual deduction may differ as annual salary expectations change.

Does the Same Tax Slab Apply to Everyone?

No.

The special salaried income tax rates generally apply where salary income is more than 75% of an individual's taxable income.

People with substantial business income, professional income or other non-salary sources may fall under different tax rules.

Similarly, tax-exempt components, eligible tax credits, overseas income, foreign tax adjustments and other individual circumstances may affect the final tax payable.

Therefore, a person's taxable salary is not always identical to their gross salary or take-home pay.

What Changed in Salary Tax Slabs for 2026–27?

The Finance Act 2026 introduced changes to the salary tax structure.

Important changes include:

  • The annual tax-free threshold remained Rs. 600,000.
  • The rate for the Rs. 2.2 million to Rs. 3.2 million annual income band was reduced from 23% to 20%.
  • The rate for the Rs. 3.2 million to Rs. 4.1 million band was reduced from 30% to 25%.
  • New 29% and 32% bands were introduced for certain higher income ranges.
  • The maximum 35% marginal rate now begins above Rs. 7 million of annual taxable salary.
  • The previous 9% surcharge on salaried income above Rs. 10 million was removed for Tax Year 2027.

These changes are reflected in the amended salary tax slabs applicable from July 1, 2026.

How Is Income Tax Deducted From Monthly Salary?

Under Section 149 of the Income Tax Ordinance, employers are generally required to deduct applicable income tax from salary payments.

The employer estimates the employee's annual tax liability and determines appropriate deductions during the tax year, subject to the applicable rules.

Monthly deductions can change when an employee receives a bonus, increment, promotion, taxable benefit or other adjustment.

Employees should review their salary slips and annual tax deduction statements to confirm the amounts withheld.

Does a Salaried Person Need to File an Income Tax Return?

Being employed and having tax deducted from salary does not automatically mean an income tax return has been filed.

A salaried person who meets the applicable legal filing requirements must submit an income tax return through FBR.

A person may also wish to file in order to maintain accurate tax records and meet relevant ATL requirements.

Filing obligations depend on the individual's income, assets, legal status and other statutory conditions.

Even if the employer deducts tax each month, the employee should independently verify whether a return is required.

How to File an Income Tax Return for Salaried Persons

Salaried individuals can generally file their tax returns through the FBR IRIS portal.

Step 1: Register With FBR

Obtain or confirm the relevant FBR registration and access to your IRIS account.

Step 2: Collect Your Documents

Prepare your salary certificate, annual tax deduction certificate, bank statements and other required information.

Step 3: Select the Correct Tax Year

For income earned between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027, select Tax Year 2027 when the applicable return filing process is available.

Step 4: Enter Salary and Tax Details

Provide your salary income, taxable benefits, tax withheld and other applicable income or deduction details.

Step 5: Complete Your Wealth Statement

Where required, disclose your assets, liabilities and expenses and reconcile changes in wealth.

Step 6: Review and Submit

Confirm that the return is accurate, submit it and retain the acknowledgment.

Step 7: Check Your ATL Status

If you need to establish or maintain active taxpayer status, verify your position using FBR's official Active Taxpayer List facilities.

Documents Required for Salaried Person Tax Return Filing

Commonly requested documents include:

  • CNIC and registered mobile number.
  • FBR IRIS account information.
  • Annual salary certificate.
  • Tax deduction certificate from employer.
  • Bank statements.
  • Details of taxable benefits and bonuses.
  • Investment and property details.
  • Previous tax return, if available.
  • Information about other sources of income.
  • Wealth statement supporting records, where applicable.

The exact documents depend on the taxpayer's circumstances.

Salary Tax Calculator Pakistan – Calculate Your Income Tax

Instead of manually calculating every salary slab, taxpayers may use an income tax calculator based on the current FBR rules.

Before relying on a calculation, verify that the calculator uses the correct tax year.

For the financial year 2026–27, the applicable salaried tax slabs are those for Tax Year 2027, not Tax Year 2026.

A calculator should also distinguish between monthly salary, annual salary, taxable salary and any additional income or tax credits.
